A court portrait of the infantas
Isabel Clara Eugenia (1566-1633)
and Catalina Micaela (1567-1597),
who where the daughters of Felipe
II (1556-1598) by his third wife,
Isabel de Valois (1546-1568).
The girls are dressed as adults and
shown at a distance. In keeping
with the protocol of their relative
ages, Isabel Clara Eugenia is
closer to the viewer, in a painting
that is halfway between official
and private. This type of portraits
exhibited the Monarch's dynastic
continuity and simultaneously
served as mementos of distant
family members. S
