In this popular scene, two people,
one dressed in eighteenth century
fashion, with a cape and
two-cornered hat, are depicted in
front of the Pavilion of Carlos V
in the Gardens of the Alcázar of
Seville.
This is one of a set of small
panels painted by Raimundo de
Madrazo in 1868 during his visit to
Granada and Seville.
Despite its small size, this work,
like the rest of the series, is
characterized by extraordinary
pictorial quality. The artist took
much pleasure in describing such
precise details as the decorations
of the tiles adorning the building
or the vegetation, with its organs
and perfectly identifiable floral
species.
This work entered the Prado Museum
as part of the legacy of Ramón
Errazu.
