Writing the Prado

The Writing the Prado Fellowship is an initiative of the Prado Museum, sponsored by the Fundación Loewe, and in collaboration with Spanish Granta. The Prado hosts internationally renowned writers to engage imaginatively with the Museum’s collections and rich history, and create a piece of literature to be published as part of the Museum’s fiction collection.

To date, the Fellows include 2003 Nobel Prize for Literature John Maxwell Coetzee; the writer Chloe Aridjis, winner of the 2020 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction; 2018 Nobel Prize for Literature Olga Tokarczuk; and currently with us is the 2014 Princess of Asturias Award for Literature, John Banville.

What is Writing the Prado?

Writing the Prado is an international program under the auspices of the Prado Museum. Tailor-designed for each resident, the writers are given open access to explore the museum’s collections, its laboratories, workshops, curators, and to familiarize themselves with the Museum’s rich history. Spending up to four weeks immersed in the Prado's celebrated collection offers unique insights into the creative process of some of the greatest painters and sculptors in the history of world art. The aim of the Fellowship is to stimulate meaningful dialogue between literature and the visual arts, fostering innovative forms and content for storytelling through language. Through the Fellowship program, the Prado supports creative excellence in fiction for writers at different stages of their careers, both established and highly celebrated writers, and others who are at mid-career.

Fundación Loewe sponsors two annual residencies, allowing renowned international writers to immerse themselves in the museum's history and heart. The participating authors will share their experiences in a conversation within the cycle of Literary Conversations at the Prado. They also produce a piece of short fiction for publication in the Prado Fiction Collection, followed by the highly prestigious literary journal, Spanish Granta. Its editor, Valerie Miles, acts as advisor to the project, and she is chair of the selection committee.
