See author's fileThis is a preliminary oil sketch for the ceiling of the ante-chamber of Ferdinand VII’s bedroom in the Royal Palace in Madrid. Hymen, bearer of the flame of chaste love and the nuptial torch, leads the way. Seated in her chariot, Juno flies over Sleep as he slumbers on a rocky crag, surrounded by symbols that emphasise this invitation to conjugal love at night.
