Gertrude Katherine Lathrop

Albany, New York (United States), 1896 - Falls Village, Connecticut (United States), 1986

She was the daughter of a painter and sister of an illustrator, Gertrude Katherine Lathrop, who specialized in small-format animal subjects, as well as medals featuring animal themes and wildlife advocacy, and portraits. She studied in 1918 at the New York School of Fine Arts, known as the "Art Students League," under Gutzon Borglum (1867-1941), and completed her studies with him at the American School of Sculpture between 1920 and 1921. Borglum was a sculptor renowned for his colossal heads of American presidents at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota.

Throughout her life, she received numerous accolades. The most significant collection of her medals is held at Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina, which boasts the largest collection of figurative work by American sculptors.

She was a member of several prominent American art societies, including the National Association of Women Artists, the National Sculpture Society, the Hispanic Society of America, the Albany Numismatic Society, and the Medallic Art Society, among others. Her documentary legacy is preserved in her hometown at the Albany Institute of History & Art Library.
