Two lions and a lioness
Oil on canvas. Ca. 1620
This is an ambitious painting that has been well executed. The scene features three animals that repeat others from an important painting by Rubens, Daniel in the Lions’ Den, painted in around 1614 (National Gallery of Art in Washington DC). In a letter written on 28 April 1618, Rubens stated that he painted this picture ‘from life’, implying that he had studied at least some of the animals from live specimens. There are several drawings of lions made by Rubens around 1612–13 in Brussels. The Ar

Landscape with Mercury and Herse
Oil on panel. Ca. 1635
In The Metamorphosis, the poet Ovid very precisely describes the moment when Mercury, on his way to Athens, met a group of Nymphs carrying offerings to the goddess Palas. Mercury immediately fell in love with Herse, the most beautiful of all. The canvas, with an extremely horizontal format, sets the scene in a wooded landscape where the nymphs chat and play on their way towards the temple in the background. Mercury appears in full flight on the right, over a river whose prolongation opens the pe

Act of Devotion by Rudolf I of Habsburg
Oil on canvas. Ca. 1625
This work depicts an episode from the life of Rodolfo I (1218-1291), founder of the Hapsburg Dynasty. While hunting with his page, Regulo de Kyburg, Rodolfo met a priest and a sexton who were taking the eucharist to a dying man but found their way blocked by a swift-flowing river. In order to help them cross the river, and as a demonstration of their respect for the Holy Sacraments, Rodolfo and his page ceded their horses to the two holy men. The landscape was painted by Wildens and the figures
