A royal family portrait

This painting shows all the family members of King Philip the Fifth.

King Philip the Fifth and his wife, Queen Elisabeth Farnese, are in the middle of the painting.

They sit surrounded by their entire family.

The crown is on a cushion next to the left arm of the queen.

The king has a tired expression, and the queen has a strong and dominant expression.

Behind the monarchs is one of their sons, Louis de Bourbon.

At the feet of the monarchs are 2 of their granddaughters playing with a dog.

The other man next to the monarchs is their son, Philip, Duke of Parma.

He is next to his wife, Luisa Isabel de Bourbon.

She sits in front of him.

In the group on the left, there are 3 people.

The man is Ferdinand the Fourth, the son of the king and his first wife is Maria Luisa Gabriella of Savoy.

Ferdinand the Fourth later became the king of Spain.

Next to him, we see his wife, Barbara of Portugal, and his sister, Infanta Maria Ana Victoria, Princess of Brazil.

Maria Ana Victoria was not in Spain when Van Loo created the painting.

In the group on the right is the Infante Charles, the son of the kings.

Charles was the king of Naples at that time.

Later, he became Charles the Third, the king of Spain, when his half-brother Ferdinand the Sixth died without children.

Next to Charles is his wife, Maria Amalia of Saxony, and behind them are the infantas Marie Thérèse Raphaëlle and Maria Antonia Ferdinanda, who are also daughters of the monarchs.

The family of Philip the Fifth is in a palace with a garden in the background.

They listen to a concert by musicians on a balcony and display their wealth through jewellery and clothing.

The painter

It is a large painting, and Van Loo painted it in the style of French painters who portrayed royalty.

Van Loo was a French painter who moved to Spain because Philip the Fifth hired him to paint several pictures for the Spanish monarchy.

During this time, he painted the commissions of the king and taught at the Academia de San Fernando (Fine Arts Academy).
