The Female Perspective. Isabella Farnese

Isabel Farnese is the figure to whom Episode 8 of the documentary series “The Female Perspective” is dedicated, a series launched in 2022 that highlights the significant role of female patronage in shaping the Museum’s collections. Co‑produced with the Fundación “la Caixa”, the Museo del Prado will premiere this new 35‑minute episode on 15 December, simultaneously at the Auditorium (free admission until capacity is reached) and on the CaixaForum platform.

The documentary tells the story of how, for more than half a century, Isabel Farnese exercised active patronage guided by a cultivated gaze and her own independent judgement. It also explores how, thanks to the personal resources that afforded her notable autonomy in artistic decision‑making, she developed a form of patronage that was decisive in the Spanish monarchy of the eighteenth century. The film traces her legacy and reveals how her artistic vision played a determining role in shaping the collections that we admire today at the Museo del Prado.
