Who are the people in the painting?

This painting shows Queen Joanna the First in front of the coffin of her husband, Philip the First.

Joanna and Philip were monarchs in the 16th century.

Joanna the First is known as Joanna the Mad because people believed she had a mental illness.

In the centre of the painting, we see Joanna the First dressed in black, looking at the coffin of Philip the First.

Philip the First is known as Philip the Handsome.

There are 2 people in front of Joanna the First: a woman who looks at the queen and a monk who prays.

The queen ordered the transfer of the coffin of Philip the First from Burgos, where he died, to Granada for his burial.

The stories of the journey tell us that the queen and the people accompanying her had to stop at a convent to rest.

Queen Joanna thought it was a convent of friars when, in fact, it was a convent of nuns.

When Joanna realised her mistake, she decided not to stay at the convent. Instead, she took the coffin of her husband into the countryside.

The painting shows the queen and her court in the countryside, with a convent in the background.

The court means the people who accompany the queen. They are behind the queen in the painting.

After a long journey, they rest by a bonfire, and their expressions show boredom and compassion for the queen.

The painting portrays a winter landscape with a cloudy sky and dusk lights.
