Restauration: "In the Italian Manner. Spain and the Mediterranean Gothic, 1320-1420"
Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid
26 May 2026 – 20 September 2026
From 26 May, this exhibition—examining how, long before the advent of the Renaissance, Italy set the pace for a profound artistic transformation whose impact found one of its principal areas of reception in the Hispanic kingdoms—will be open to the public.
In parallel with the preparation of the exhibition, an extensive restoration campaign has been carried out by the Museo del Prado’s Conservation Department, with the support of the Fundación Iberdrola España as a ‘Protecting Member’ of its Restoration Programme. This work has affected around a dozen pieces. Among them, of particular importance and historiographical significance, is the careful intervention on two panels depicting the Apostles Simon and Matthew, from the high altarpiece of Toledo, which has revealed the original painting by one of the great Florentine masters of the Trecento, Gherardo Starnina.
