A fox, a hare and a cat
1774. Oil on canvas. On display elsewhere
A cartoon for a tapestry intended for the "chamber piece" in the room of the Prince of Asturias, –soon-to-be King Charles IV– at the palace of San Lorenzo del Escorial. It was commissioned by the architect Francisco Sabatini at a cost of 1,000 reales de vellón. The composition follows the painting The Cat and the fox by Frans Snyders (P001755), which illustrates Aesop´s fable of the same title. (Díaz Padrón, M.: Catálogo de pinturas. Escuela flamenca s. XVII [Catalogue of paintings. Flemish School. 17th century], Madrid, 1975, p. 365).
