A Franciscan Taking Vows
Early XVII century. Grey-brown wash, Pencil ground, Pencil on paper. Not on display
In front of an altar, a bishop listens to the oath of a monk kneeling before him with his hands together. A deacon in a dalmatic reads a thick book on the right part of the composition. In the background, seated under a four-poster frame, standing monks attend to a king (or a pontiff?).
This work was made in Madrid at the beginning of the 17th century in a style very similar to that of Vicente Carducho or Eugenio Cajés, by whom it may have been made.
