1883. Oil on canvas. On display elsewhere
This canvas was exhibited at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1884, where it was awarded the third medal. It has the following description: ‘When the King of Castile, Ferdinand III the Saint, was besieging Jaen, one morning King Alamar presented himself dressed in full armour at the royal palace of Ferdinand. He asked to be admitted to his presence, kissed his hand, and told him why he was there’ (Lafuente, Historia de España), (Cat. ENBA.)
Mohammed ben Alhamar was proclaimed king of Granada in 1238. He ceded the city of Jaen to the Christian King Ferdinand III ‘the Saint’ (Valparaíso, Zamora, 1199/1201-Seville, 1252), King of Castile (1217–1252) and Leon (1230–1252), and signed a treaty of vassalage with him.
