Anne Marie Louise of Orléans

1655. Oil on canvas.
Not on display

The daughter of Gaston de France and granddaughter of Henry IV of France, she was born at the Louvre on May 29, 1627. First called Mademoiselle d´Orléans, she was later known as the Grande Mademoiselle and was the Duchess of Montpensier. She died on April 5, 1693.

According to the catalog of 1854, This work was signed "Beaubruns fact. 1655"; that signature was later lost, perhaps when the canvas was relined.

This picture (and P2233, P2234, P2240, P2291, P2298, P2300) was sent in 1655 by Anne of Austria, the wife of Louis XIII, to her brother, King Philip IV of Spain, as a means of enhancing relations between the courts of the two countries.
