Apparition of Christ to Saint Jerome
XVII century. Grey-brown wash, Pencil on laid paper. Not on display
Saint Jerome is depicted in the centre, half-kneeling and naked. He raises his arms in a gesture of amazement, while turning his head towards Christ. The latter appears before the saint to the left of the composition, seated on some clouds and cherubim. Above, angels fly with scourges; next to the saint, a young angel clasps his hands in prayer. A skull, a book and a lion lie on the floor.
There are no records of any other drawing attributed to the Juncosa cousins that could serve as a point of comparison. It is therefore wise to keep it, at least as a provisional attribution. The quality is not outstanding. However, there is a certain passionate and nervous tone, which seems to be closer to José’s style than to Joaquín’s.
