Cecilio Pla, in his Studio, with the Painting Devotion
1907 - 1915. Autochrome on glass plaque.Not on display
This is a portrait of Cecilio Pla in his studio with his beret and work coat. He is pictured in front of the painting Devotion, which is covered by a white cloth on one of its corners. The canvas in the background could represent the reverence of the people of Madrid to the Santa Faz, a small painting kept in the chapel of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción in Madrid, popularly known as the church of God’s Face. Every Good Friday, a popular pilgrimage was held in Madrid in which the people of Madrid would come to venerate the image and then enjoy the celebration with food and drink in the surrounding area. Cecilio Pla produced several works on this theme.
This stereoscopic photograph is part of a set of 22 glass plates (HF5954 to HF5975) which came to the Museo del Prado in a box labelled ‘UNION PHOTOGRAPHIQUE INDUSTRIELLE / ETABLISSEMENTS / LUMIÈRE & JOUGLA’.
