Charity
Second half of the XVII century. Pencil, Grey-brown wash, Red chalk on laid paper. Not on display
Charity is depicted seated, surrounded by children and with one of them on her knees. She is holding a flaming heart in her right hand. There is a sign above her head where the following is written: CHARITAS.
Although the attribution does not appear to date from before 1650–1700 and there is no other extant drawing by Juan Simón Navarro, the nature of the drawing recalls the Madrid school, and the Flemish-Rubenesque influences are not at odds with what would probably be his style as a draughtsman.
