Chest

1550 - 1575. Walnut wood.
Room 056B

Pieces of furniture of this type originated in northern Italy and were extremely popular during the Renaissance. They were used for storing a range of objects, particularly clothes and textiles. This example has a very simple structure inspired by Roman sarcophagi. Its elaborate carved decoration in the Mannerist style consists of garlands, an ox skull and zoomorphic figures. The base is modern.
