Conversion of Saint Paul
XVIII century. Wash, Pencil, Pencil ground, Grey-brown ink on dark toned laid paper. Not on display
The same composition is recorded in the Cambiaso Album, no.31, D01825, where two further drawn versions of the design, including one probably by Cambiaso himself, are cited. The draftsman responsible for the present copy seems to have worked hesitantly, as if the process of transferring the lines from his prototype had caused him difficulty. The use of bistre and purple-brown wash, together with the heavy laid paper employed, suggest the copyist was eighteenth century – a period when drawings of Cambiaso were still much admired.
