Wertmüller was born in Stockholm and trained in Paris and Rome. He executed the present portrait and its companion (P002226) during his time in Spain. While there he painted the leading members of the aristocracy, to whom he was introduced by the Count. A diplomat, the present sitter was born in Over Issel, The Hague, in 1737 and was the Dutch ambassador in Madrid in 1783.
