Crucified Christ with two seated male nudes
Ca. 1770. Black chalk on grey paper. Not on display
This drawing depicts Christ frontally on a low cross, with four nails. Two nude male figures can be perceived at his feet. The one to the right, bearded and with his legs crossed, leans his right hand on the plinth of the cross. The other one – who is younger – has his back turned, his right hand leaning on the ground, and his left hand seemingly outstretched.
The drawing, which has a strange effect, seems to be an academic exercise of a nude study rather than a preparation for a religious composition. The postures of the nude figures could be justified as a study for the soldiers who cast lots on the tunic. Its style dates from around 1770 and is influenced by Mengs and reminiscent of Bayeu’s work.
