Crucified Christ
XVIII century. White chalk, Black chalk on blue paper. Not on display
This is a preparatory study of a crucified Christ with three nails and his head tilted to the left. The Museo del Prado keeps a conclusive study (D000595) for the head of this work’s Christ. Despite slight variations in details on the head, it coincides with Museum’s The Crucified Christ (P004329), which has been entrusted to the University of Granada since 1881. It was likely painted for the king’s oratory in the Royal Palace and is strongly reminiscent of the work of Mengs.
