Death of Juan Escobedo

Juan de Escobedo was the secretary of Don Juan de Austria during the period at which he was Governor General of the Netherlands. On discovering Antonio Pérez’s intrigues with the Flemish, he sent Escobedo to Madrid to seek further support for his Flemish policy. Pérez considered the newcomer dangerous. Because he was scared of the discovery of his double-game, Don Antonio influenced the king to think that Escobedo was the instigator of a possible betrayal of Don John. Therefore, it was decided to eliminate him. Escobedo was assassinated in the Callejón de la Almudena in Madrid on 31 March 1578. This political error was quickly used by Pérez’s enemies, who cast a shadow of doubt on Philip II. An investigation was initiated and revealed that the secretary was guilty. The king replaced Pérez with the elder Granvela and ordered his arrest and imprisonment on 28 July 1579.
