Fallen Christ with the Virgin, Veronica and the Cyrenean / Sketches for a crucifixion
XVIII century. Black chalk, Touches of white chalk on grey paper. Not on display
On the left of the composition, this drawing depicts the Virgin in profile, wearing a mantle and opening her arms. Veronica is standing as she offers the veil to Christ, who has fallen and is almost lying down. He raises his head in profile towards her. The Cyrenean appears frontally, and an executioner in profile with a spear is on the right. Two Roman soldiers are in the foreground, in the central part of the composition. Several characters are in the background.
It is a drawing of very poor quality and is most certainly a copy of a print.
On the verso of the drawing is a light sketch of a Crucifixion in black chalk.
