Frame of Fable
XVII century. Carved, Ensamblado a media madera, Water gilding, Marbled.Room 008B
Frames produced in the 17th century reflected Baroque tastes, and the Spanish Baroque frame was regarded as a category in itself. Though it derived from the Renaissance cassetta, the central frieze was wider, and generally contained decorative elements which by now included three-dimensional carvings, such as fleshy leaves. Of the various models developed, this reverse-profile frame with its scrolling acanthus decoration in the corners and centres was the most common.
