Frame of Female Bust in an Urn
Mid-XVIIIcentury. Water gilding, Chased, Pastiglia / pastework, Joined / assembled, Carved.Room 023
These original frames (M8346 and M8347) were made in Italy using exquisite decorative techniques. The carvings, almost in the round, capture the dynamic interplay of twisting acanthus leaves. Details such as the large, open acanthus serving as a scallop or crest over each figure, as well as the alternation of shiny, matt and textured gilding finishes, make this pair of frames a superb example of the European Rococo style. The early glass has been preserved.
