The entire perimeter of this boxwood frame is carved with intricate beading and foliate scrolls. The crest features an elaborate garland of roses and lilac, intertwined with a silk-like drape in brass and a quiver holding arrows. A carved ornament on the lower moulding completes this frame, whose rich elegance wholly befits the sitter. The exquisite carving is intended as a display of virtuoso technique. According to the stamp in the lower corner, it was made by the prestigious Paris firm Guéret Frères in 1876.
