Francisco Rovira
Ca. 1814. Oil on canvas. On display elsewhere
On the lower part of the painting there is a lengthwise broken inscription that reads "AL EXCMO. S.R DUQUE DEL YNFANTADO, LO DEDICA D.N JUAN ROVIRA Y FORMOSA" (to the most excellent Mr. Duke of the Infantado, Mr. Juan Rovira y Formosa dedicates it). This inscription has led, erroneously, to consign "Juan Rovira y Formosa" as the artist and the portrayed person as the Duke of the Infantado. The person portrayed is Brigadier Francisco Rovira, famous for the capture of the Castle of San Fernando de Figueras (Gerona) on April 11, 1811. The portrait commemorates this military event by representing the military castle of San Fernando, which the Brigadier wields and is therefore later than that date.
