Frieze with Centaurs Fighting Horseman and Warriors
XVI century. Wash, Pencil, Pencil ground, Grey-brown ink on yellow paper. Not on display
The composition appears to be copied from an Antique frieze, as the limbs of some of the figures are abruptly terminated, as if to show the breaks in a piece of ancient sculpture, for example the right forearm of the standing warrior to the right, who takes a horse by its reins in his left hand. The fluid style of pen-and-wash drawing suggest the work of Francesco Salviati.
