Group of musician angels

XVII century. Grey-brown wash, Pencil on dark yellow paper.
Not on display

This drawing depicts a series of adolescent angels with wind instruments (horns), string instruments (violas and violoncellos) and music books. Child angels flutter amongst them.

The light and broken technique is analogous to the drawing of Saint Michael defeating Satan (D000162). It is undoubtedly a preparatory drawing for a cupola interior. It clearly recalls the work of Correggio.
