Handing over the Strap to Saint Augustine
Late XVII century. Grey-brown wash, Chalk ground, Pencil on yellow paper. Not on display
The saint, kneeling on the left of the drawing, receives the strap from the Virgin. She appears on a throne of clouds, holding the Christ Child and surrounded by angels. The Christ Child is depicted standing on his knees. At the saint’s feet, some of his symbols are represented, namely the books, the mitre and the staff.
The drawing – catalogued as a work made in Madrid at the end of the 17th century – slightly recalls Cano’s style. Nevertheless, its Italian influence from the Maratti’s work, is considerably greater.
