Head for a Female Figure and Two Lion Heads
1781. Red chalk, White chalk on dark toned paper. Not on display
This is a preparatory drawing for the head of a female figure in the centre-left part and two lion heads in the centre-right part of the cupola interior alongside the figure of the Prophet Daniel in the fresco Regina Prophetarum. The latter was painted in 1781 and is located in the right nave of the Holy Chapel of the Basilica of the Pilar of Zaragoza. The Museo Diocesano in Zaragoza keeps two preparatory sketches, one of them in grisaille. There are also various preparatory drawings for the fresco in the Museo del Prado. The right of the drawing depicts a study of a female head, in a foreshortened view from below. To the left, there is a study of two lion heads, one facing forward and the other in profile. These two heads complete the figure of the prophet (D000567).
