This is a study of the head for the figure of Understanding in the centre-left part of the fresco Providence Presiding over the Virtues and Powers of Mankind in the Royal Palace in Madrid. This fresco decorates one of the cupolas of the Dining Hall.
The study depicts the head from the front, gazing upwards and turned to the right of the drawing in a foreshortened view from below. The Museo del Prado keeps the preparatory drawing (D003560) for the entire figure, for which the head is barely sketched. Nevertheless, it depicts the same pose as this one.
