Giuseppe Fiorelli (1823–1896) devised a method for making casts of the victims of the eruption of Vesuvius. He introduced liquid gypsum into the cavities left by the decomposed bodies inside the volcanic material and, once solidified, he removed the ground to bring the resulting piece to light. These human imprints provided further information about the unfortunate inhabitants of Pompeii.
