This painting had the title Baptism in the Sacristy until the publication of the catalogue Painting of the 19th century at the Museo del Prado (2015). The introduction to the catalogue states that the change in title is motivated by ‘a criterion of strict historiographical rigour, seeking to restore the works to their original titles, as most of them were given by their artists during their lifetime and recorded in the catalogues of the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts or in the document of their acquisition. In many cases this restores to the paintings the full meaning of their iconography, which has sometimes been diminished or distorted through modern simplification.’
