Jacob and Rachel at the well watering the flocks

First half of the XVII century. Oil on canvas.
On display elsewhere

Orrente specialised in small-format biblical or evangelical series conceived as genre scenes after the manner of those produced in Venice by the Bassano family. They often depict stories from the life of Jacob, an iconography of which this scene is an example. The episode from the Bible is set in a vast landscape covered with a Venetian-style cloudscape. Jacob first encounters Rachel when she comes to the well to water the sheep (Genesis 29, 10). In this narrative approach, the painter has divided the composition into three groups, two of them in the foreground, and each brightly illuminated with focused light. In contrast, the trees and mounds are defined against a backlight. The canvas is a workshop replica.
