Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife / The Repudiation of Hagar
Second half of the XVII century. White chalk, Black chalk on grey paper. Not on display
Joseph, on the left, flees with his head turned. Potiphar’s wife is naked and holds his cape while she gets up from the bed with her right foot already on the floor. The scene is framed by a black line.
The verso depicts The Repudiation of Hagar.
This drawing is somewhat reminiscent of Murillo’s composition dealing with a similar subject. However, the drawing is likely to be the work of an artist within the Madrid court circle amongst Carreño and Claudio Coello.
