Landscape with Sea and Mountains

Ca. 1623. Oil on canvas.
Not on display

Momper was one of the finest Flemish landscape painters of the first decades of the seventeenth century. He built his works on very concrete models that he repeated in many paintings. One of them was a large-format landscape with figures in the foreground carrying out an anecdotic or everyday activity. Here the figures are hunters, along with riders and beggars. Toward the background, as was customary for this artist, the panoramic view includes large mountains totally divorced from the reality of Flanders´ flat land. In his works, distance is defined by a succession of different planes, which are defined here by the capricious seaside, which juts in and out. The high position of the horizon shows the influence of earlier generations of landscape painters, especially the panoramic views by Pieter Brueghel “the Elder” (Ca. 1525/1530-1569). The figures in the foreground have sometimes been attributed to Jan Brueghel “the Elder”, as these artists often collaborated on works. This painting is listed in the Royal Collection since at least 1700, when it hung in the halls of Madrid´s Buen Retiro Palace.
