Landscape
1875. Oil on canvas.Room 063A
Together with Juan Luna y Novicio, Hidalgo was the most important artist from the Philippines in the 19th century. Although better known as a figure painter, he was also notable for landscapes, having focused on this genre since his early years of training with Agustín Sáez (referred to in the inscription lower left). The composition includes a fisherman with his basket and a typical Philippine bahay kubo (stilt house).
