A landscape of the barren plains of Aragon, where the absence of vegetation makes rock the protagonist and the element used to build the painting. From the boulders in the foreground to the mountains in the background, the landscape is based on a panoramic and monumental sense, with a sober composition far from any artifice.
Particularly striking for its size and quality, this work is unusual within the output of Domingo Marqués due to its technical modernity and panoramic viewpoint. Also notable are the vibrant palette and decorative approach, both unique within Spanish landscape painting of this period. A comparison with works by Antonio Muñoz Degrain reveals the mutual influence between the two artists, who were friends.
