Lope de Vega (copy)
Ca. 1887. Oil on canvas. On display elsewhere
The portrait depicts the writer Félix Lope de Vega y Carpio (Madrid 1562–1635). The drawing is a copy of the original anonymous portrait, credited to Louis Tristan (1585–1624). The original is kept in the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg (inv. no. MEE 353). The engraving by Bartolomé Mauro contributed to its dissemination in Spain.
By Order of 18.6.1887, the artist was commissioned to paint this work for 400 roubles, together with the portrait of Alonso de Ercilla (P3414), for the Gallery of Illustrious Spaniards of the Museo Iconografico (Museo del Prado). However, it does not figure in the inventory of the Museo Iconográfico. The documents relating to the 1887 commission mention the artist "Mr Berker" (?) as the author of the painting.
