Luis Vives
XVII century. Oil on canvas. On display elsewhere
The painting may have been cropped. The measurements of the painting recorded by the handwritten inventory of the Museo Nacional de la Trinidad were 99 x 79 cm. These coincide with the measurements recorded by the museum´s general inventory of the paintings belonging to the Museo de la Trinidad. The Commission of the Academy chose these paintings and kept them in the repository.
This painting formed a pair with the portrait of Benito Arias Montano (P3325). Alternatively, they may have belonged to the same series, which would make these two paintings the only ones known to belong to the series in question. In the "Inventario general de pinturas del Museo del Prado, II", 1991, the painting is mistakenly listed as a work by an anonymous 19th-century Spanish painter.
