Memories of El Pósito (old public granary) of Madrid
1866. Oil on canvas. Not on display
The building of the Pósito of Madrid, located between Paseo de Recoletos and Calle Salustiano Olózaga. This building had been a warehouse since the 16th century, used to supply cereals to bakers and farmers in times of shortage, with their commitment to replenish the store after the next harvest. Philip V ordered the construction of this granary with an elliptical floor structured around a central courtyard and the ground floor forming a wide gallery, covered by a lowered vault. It had a capacity of 40,000 bushels. Until 1869, when it was demolished, it also served as a market and grain tank, and even as the Engineers´ station.
