Model of Juan de Villanueva’s project for the Cabinet of Natural History

1787. Lemonwood, Boxwood, Mahogany, Walnut, Pine. Room 100

This model provides a general idea of the third “proposal” presented by Villanueva to Charles III in 1787 -the plans have since been lost- for the construction of a Cabinet of Natural History, a building which from 1819 onwards housed the Real Museo de Pinturas, now known as the Museo del Prado. It is very similar in appearance to the final version; among the minor differences, the central area intended as a boardroom was initially square, but in the final plans was apse-shaped. The model also provides a view of the original rear facade, later modified by a number of additions.
