Oval agate platter with a cruciform motif

XVII century. Agate Room 079B

An oval piece of agate in the form of a flat brimmed tray with rounded corners. Carved in low relief on the bottom is a cruciform motif with radial arms, a central pearl decoration, and inserted rows of beads. It had a large filigree mount that disappeared in 1815 after the looting of the Treasure during the Peninsular War.

The mount on the platter is described in the 1689 Versailles inventory as filigree of white silver with numerous silver gilt rosettes. If we compare the measurements given in the 1746 inventory of La Granja de San Ildefonso (approximately 36 cm) with its width today (18.5 cm), its importance becomes clear, since it considerably varied the volume of the piece. It ran all the way around the platter, with a broadening at the ends that would have included the holes for the handles. Although this point is not mentioned in the inventories, it can be deduced from an examination of the interior of the case, lined in padded silk, where the imprint of the original form of the piece is just visible in grazing light (L. Arbeteta, in press).
