Rock crystal salver with gadrooned decoration

Ca. 1600. Rock crystal / Hyaline quartz, Silver gilt Not on display

Oval salver made up of seven pieces of rock crystal joined by mounts and mouldings of openwork silver. The central piece is oval, engraved with striking radial gadroons and a strip of festoons with two plant sprays and rows of seeds at the ends. It rests on a moulded oval foot of silver gilt. The brim of the salver is composed of a double moulding linked by four T-shaped elements with a pierced central piece and screws with flower-shaped heads. These hold the crystal plaques in place, each of them engraved with a central oval and spiral patterns emerging from the base. The ends of the oval are occupied by small bouquets. The decoration shows the persistence of Mannerist tastes for elements like ovals and mirrors. The rock crystal is of medium quality and has some old fractures.

Original state: Juan Laurent y Minier, “Vase, cristal de roche taillé et gravé, montures d’or et émail, XVIe siècle, règne de Henri III”, salver shown beneath vessel O96, c. 1879. Museo del Prado, HF0835/40 (L. Arbeteta, in press).
