Roman Cinerary Urn

Ca. 100. Marble.
Not on display

According to the Latin inscription, the freedman Quintus Laelius Felix had [the marble urn], consecrated to the manes [of the deceased], made for Laelia Coetonis, who lived for twenty-two years, by virtue of her merits. The cinerary urn has a rounded back. The front face of the urn is decorated with a wreath, supported by small blossoms. The relief of this urn, segmented by deep grooves, with garlands of an almost abstract appearance, is a product of the already exaggerated and degenerate technique of reliefs from the Flavian period. The eagle depicted in the lower corner of the monument, particularly frequently from the Flavian period onwards, can be interpreted as the guardian of the tomb.
