Saint Bartholomew
XVI century. Wash, Pencil, Grey-brown ink on yellow paper. Not on display
This is copied from one of a seres of engravings of Twelve Apostles by Marco Dente da Ravenna, which is monogrammed R S (Raffaello Sanzio) as the inventor of the designs. The Prado drawing is derived from Bartsch, though the scale of the figure in the drawn copy is enlarged in comparision with its engraved prototype. The red chalk preparatory studies for the prints, in reverse, are at Chatsworth, where they are now thought to be by Giulio Romano, in spite of the signature on the prints and a long tradition giving them to Raphael.
