Saint Cassian
Late XVII century. Pencil ground, Grey-brown wash, Pencil on laid paper. Not on display
Seated on an armchair next to a table on which a mitre, a staff, some books and an inkwell have been placed, the saint master teaches a lesson to a child. To the right, other children are seated on benches, reading and writing.
There are no records of any composition by Murillo depicting this subject. Moreover, the character of the figures and the technique seem to be alien to his style. It is clearly a work from Seville that dates from the end of the 17th century and that draws inspiration from Murillo and Valdés to a lesser extent.
