This drawing is a study of Saint John the Evangelist. It depicts the saint seated on a throne of clouds. His body faces the right of the composition, and his face is turned to the left and foreshortened when viewed from below. Saint John holds a book on his left knee and a feather in his right hand. To his right, there is an eagle. The pointed shape at the bottom suggests that this may have been a preliminary sketch for the corresponding pendentive in the cupola interior of the Collegiate Church of La Granja.
